about us

PhoneShaala is a project envisioned by eArth Samvarta Foundation (eSF) and developed by their Tech partners KDC. When eSF witnessed first hand how underprivileged children across the country are unable to continue learning due to the COVID 19 pandemic. These children cannot afford internet and smartphones so were unable to access online learning.

Additionally, PhoneShaala will also be beneficial for underprivileged students after the lockdown as many of them drop out and have low attendance rates due to other compulsions like child labour, child marriage, menstruation, physical disability and long walking distances to school.

We identified the following problems during the lockdown:

  1. Children from low income families are missing out on education because they cannot afford smartphones or the internet to connect with their teachers. {Article: The Print}
  2. There is an increase in child abuse during this lockdown, creating a mental health crisis.  {Article: IndiaToday}
  3. The inability to continue learning during the lockdown, will widen inequalities in education. Long term: This will reduce economic productivity.  {Article: ScienceDirect}
  4. Teachers of underprivileged children have reported struggling to connect with their students & resultantly finding it difficult to cope with orders from authorities to continue teaching their students.

Teachers Perspective

During the COVID 19 pandemic I witnessed that a lot of my teachers were struggling to reach their students as many of them did not have access to the internet and smartphones. PhoneShaala proved to be a platform where my teachers could create audio lessons and not only teach their students but their specially curated lessons were being heard by children across the country! This instilled a sense of inspiration among my teachers during the gloom of the tragic pandemic. As a strong believer in alternative pedagogy, PhoneShaala in fact is also helping candidates of Bachelors of Education and other Teacher training courses to get an experience in alternate pedagogy and teaching styles that relies more on value and conceptual building instead of racing to get scores or complete syllabus. Additionally, PhoneShaala is also proving to be useful for children with visual disabilities!

During the COVID19 quarantine I’ve been trying really hard to ensure that my students’ learning doesn’t stop. I am especially struggling to ensure that learning continues for students who don’t have access to the internet so that the learning gaps don’t widen and students continue to stay motivated and invested in learning. PhoneShaala will help make learning available for all regardless of their access to internet. It will help teachers like me in ensuring equal access to quality education. We could also use PhoneShaala for teaching – learning not just during the lockdown but it will continue to be helpful even after the lockdown by allowing us to provide after school support and motivating parents to be involved in their child’s learning from home by giving them access to education and communication.
